Weekly Bulletin - January 30, 2015

Recently, we became the proud recipient of a grant from Harvard Pilgrim, thanks to Francis Wyman parent and Harvard Pilgrim employee, Arif Moriya.  This grant will be used for curriculum and library materials, classroom supplies, and student support. Huge thanks to Mr. Moriya for thinking of our school!

“Wee Deliver”
Neither rain nor sleet nor dark of night will interrupt Francis Wyman’s “Wee Deliver” mail service.  Students throughout the grades write letters as our third graders deliver them in a small-scale simulation of a postal system. This activity encourages student writing in an authentic setting.   While students learn to properly write and address a letter, “Wee Deliver” encourages a sense of community between the grades.  “Wee Deliver” will begin Friday , February 2 and run through Thursday, February 13.  Each room will have its own address so if you would like to mail a letter to your child (no packages or food please), drop it off in the mailbox by the office.  It must be properly addressed and must include a make-believe stamp, such as a sticker or a drawing.   “Wee Deliver” is more than a slogan – it’s a guarantee!! See the end of this post for all the addresses!

Science Center "Experiments" for a Snowy Day

Stuck inside without much to do?
Snow problem!
Burlington Science Center has two great science-packed suggestions to make the most of your snow day.

SNOW SCIENCE FUN #1: LIVE CHICK HATCHING!

The chicks were supposed to hatch on Tuesday and Wednesday in the first and fourth grade classrooms at the Francis Wyman and Pine Glen schools.  Due to the storm, we decided to set up a live webcam at the Science Center in one of the incubators.  Watch them from the comfort of your home by tuning in to our live chick incubator feed on the Burlington Science Center blog!
**Note to parents: Sometimes, during the chick hatching process, unforeseen circumstances can occur.
The Science Center may choose to stop the live feed at any time.  Thanks for your understanding.

SNOW SCIENCE FUN #2: HOW MUCH WATER IN A FOOT OF SNOW?

How many inches of water does it take to make a foot of snow? The answer might surprise you!

Make a prediction, then watch Mr. Musselman’s “Blizzard Science” video posted on the Burlington Science Center blog and perform the experiment for yourself!

You can use our step-by-step directions or design a similar experiment for yourself. Whatever your results, be sure to write them down so you can compare them with Mr. Musselman or a friend!

Find both these experiments at
